The City of Lookout Mountain is dedicated to protecting and preserving our beautiful and unique water resources and also meeting all regulatory requirements established by the State of Georgia. For the past several years, the City has designed and implemented a host of Stormwater Management Program activities to meet these goals, some of which are described below.
For example, new ordinances requiring additional stormwater management controls (or best management practices) during and after new construction and redevelopment were adopted by the City in 2006. Educational material and on-site training is provided to all commercial businesses during annual inspections to identify opportunities to prevent polluted stormwater runoff. City staff also receives annual training and regularly utilize techniques to prevent potential fuel spills, control erosion and sediment control and collect debris that could impact the health of local streams. The City’s storm sewer system (e.g., retention ponds, ditches, catch basins and outfalls) are inspected and maintained on a regular basis. Structural improvements are made to the system, based on critical need and available resources. All activities are documented and reported to the public and City Council on a monthly basis and to the GA Environmental Protection Division (EPD) each year in January.
The Stormwater Management Program has evolved over the years and seeks additional opportunities to work with the community to enhance watershed protection on the Mountain. For more information, please contact Brad Haven at 706-820-1586.
