New Street Signs
During the past few months, several residents have commented on the need to replace and update our street signs. Derick Forester, Assistant City Manager, was given the assignment and he has a recommendation after researching the options, finding out what was wanted and what made economic sense.
At about the same time, new federal and state standards were announced. The requirements include the need for reflective materials for night visibility and letters large enough to be easily read.
Derick determined that we could no longer obtain wooden signs as we now have and even if we could, reflectivity was an issue. He then found a supplier in Indiana and determined that the very best and most cost effective way to replace the current signs is with an aluminum sign with reflective letters on a dark brown background to come as closely as possible to the look of our current wooden street signs.
Then he selected a cast aluminum cap that will fit on top of the wooden post and a bracket to connect the second sign on top. The sample for consideration is the one pictured above. Not only is this very attractive, it continues the use of wooden posts and will allow the city to continue using most of those currently in place. The top cap and bracket can be sprayed brown to compliment the look of the signs. The reflective border was selected give a more finished and dressier look and to help with visibility on foggy nights.
When you are out and about, drive by the intersection of Wood Nymph and Mother Goose Trails. If you like the look or have suggestions, let Derick know, 820-1586.
